Beyond the Bounty
What happens when a regime puts a million-dollar bounty on your head—and then uses AI to hunt you across borders?
For demanding democracy in Hong Kong, a million-dollar bounty now hangs over my head. At the Oslo Freedom Forum, I took the stage to reflect on surviving tear gas, rubber bullets, and constant surveillance, while confronting the terrifying new reality of transnational repression that follows dissidents like me into our everyday lives abroad.
Beyond the financial bounty, the Chinese regime and Hong Kong government have pledged a “lifetime’s endeavour” to hunt us down. Today, modern dictators are leveraging AI and emerging technologies to hyper-charge these oppressive tactics.
When they targeted me with weaponised AI deepfakes, I refused to be silenced. Inspired by the courageous women who have also faced these digital attacks, I decided to make these images public for the very first time on the OFF main stage.
My story is not just one of exile, but of the defiant fight to stay visible when a regime seeks to erase you.
Hong Kong ne répond plus
I’m featured in a new documentary “Hong Kong ne répond plus”.
This film is for anyone who fears that Hong Kong is a lost cause, or for those who want to understand what the city is going through right now. The director, Antoine Védeilhé, has a remarkable story of his own. During production, he was searched at the airport and deported after authorities found a letter from me in his possession.
Despite this, he and his team showed incredible persistence, interviewing people who love the city and remain steadfast within it, including ex-councillor Leticia Wong, student leader Chan Chi-sum, and artist Kong Yiu-wing. Antoine has portrayed our community with such beauty, nuance, and respect.
It was an honour to be featured alongside so many amazing people, including Shirley Leung, Chan Kin-man, Sebastian Lai, Fu Tong, Yu-Jie Chen, Lord Patten, and Lord Sumption. The film also includes perspectives from the opposition, featuring Regina Ip, Allan Zeman, and Innes Tang.
The film and a TV debate are now available online on France TV, as part of the Le Monde en face programme, and a Swiss channel RTS.
Turning repression into resilience, and resilience into action.
