Future of Democracy Forum 2022

At the Future of Democracy Forum, hosted by Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I joined a panel on how free countries can support people confronting authoritarian regimes. I stressed that democracies must move beyond appeasement of China and adopt firm, tangible measures — from suspending extradition treaties and investigating overseas police stations to confronting violations of sovereignty directly. Drawing from Hong Kong’s experience, I underlined that the movement is not lost but transformed: diaspora communities are building overseas resistance and civil society, and democratic allies have a vital role to play in sustaining this transition.
